Survival Knife

A fixed-blade survival knife is the single most versatile tool you can carry — for food prep, cutting cordage, making fire feathers, and countless field tasks. Choose a full-tang blade you can rely on when it matters.

Survival Knife

Why it matters

A good knife does more jobs than any other single item in a kit: preparing food, cutting rope and webbing, splitting kindling, shaping tent pegs, and improvising repairs. When you're cold, tired or under pressure, a blade that cuts cleanly and safely saves time and energy.

A cheap folding knife can fail at exactly the wrong moment. A simple, well-made fixed-blade knife has no moving parts to break and gives you a dependable edge for years — which is why it's a foundation of every serious kit.

When to use it

Reach for it daily in the outdoors: batoning small wood for a fire, preparing food, cutting paracord to length, or trimming a bandage. In an emergency it becomes a shelter-building and self-rescue tool.

Keep it sheathed and to hand rather than buried in a pack. A knife you can't reach quickly is far less useful than one on your belt or in a top pocket.

Features to look for

Fixed, full-tang blade

A fixed blade with the steel running the full length of the handle is far stronger than a folder and won't fail under load. Avoid flimsy folding knives for serious use.

Comfortable, grippy handle

A moulded rubber or textured handle keeps its grip when wet or cold — essential in UK conditions. A guard helps stop your hand sliding onto the blade.

A secure sheath

A firm sheath that holds the knife safely and clips to a belt or pack means the blade is always to hand and never rattling loose in your kit.

Common mistakes

Buying a giant 'Rambo' knife

Huge hollow-handle survival knives are heavy, unbalanced and often poorly made. A modest 10cm blade from a reputable maker will out-perform them for real tasks.

Letting the edge go blunt

A blunt knife is dangerous — it slips and needs more force. Learn to strop and sharpen it, and keep a small sharpener in your kit.
