Smoke Alarm

A working smoke alarm buys you the seconds that matter in a house fire — the difference between waking up in time and not waking up at all. Every UK home needs at least one on each floor.

Smoke Alarm

Why it matters

Most fatal house fires happen at night, when a fire can take hold long before anyone smells smoke. A smoke alarm is the one piece of kit that watches while you sleep, and the fire service is clear that the households most at risk are the ones without a working one.

It is also the cheapest life-safety upgrade you can make. Modern sealed 10-year alarms cost a few pounds a year over their life, need no battery changes, and fit in minutes with a screwdriver. There is no good reason to be without one — or to leave a dead one on the ceiling.

When to use it

Fit one on every level of the home as a minimum — hallways and landings are the standard spots because they sit on your escape route. Add one inside or near bedrooms if anyone sleeps with the door shut.

Test it monthly with the button, and treat a chirping alarm as a job for today, not next week. Pair it with a carbon monoxide alarm and a fire blanket so the whole home-safety layer is covered, not just fire detection.

Features to look for

Sealed 10-year battery

A tamper-proof lithium cell that lasts the alarm's whole life means no flat batteries and no 3am low-battery chirps. Replace the entire unit at 10 years.

Optical (photoelectric) sensor

Optical alarms respond well to the slow, smouldering fires common in homes and are less prone to nuisance triggers than older ionisation types. Good for landings and living areas.

Test and hush button

A large button to test the alarm and to silence a nuisance trigger for a few minutes without pulling it off the ceiling — the feature that stops people disabling alarms.

Kitemark / EN 14604

Look for BS EN 14604 and a BSI Kitemark so you know the alarm meets the UK/European standard rather than an untested import.

Common mistakes

One alarm for the whole house

A single alarm downstairs may never wake someone sleeping upstairs with the door closed. Fit one per floor, minimum, and interlink them if you can.

Fitting it in the kitchen

Standard smoke alarms too close to the hob cause constant false alarms, so people take out the battery. Use a heat alarm in the kitchen and keep smoke alarms on the escape route.

Never testing it

Alarms fail silently. A monthly button test takes ten seconds and is the only way to know it still works when it counts.
