Folding Shovel

A compact folding shovel digs a fire pit, a latrine, or gets a car unstuck from mud or snow. Small enough to live in a boot or pack, useful the moment ground work is needed.

Folding Shovel

Why it matters

Plenty of jobs in the outdoors and on the road need digging, and almost nothing else in a kit does that job. A folding shovel clears snow from around tyres, digs a drainage channel around a tent, buries waste properly, or lifts a car out of mud — tasks that are miserable or impossible with bare hands.

It folds down small enough to sit in a car boot or the bottom of a rucksack without being a burden, so it's one of those tools that costs little in space but earns its place the rare time you genuinely need to move earth or snow.

When to use it

Reach for it when a car is bogged down in mud, sand or snow — digging out the wheels is usually the fastest way to get moving again, especially combined with a traction aid. It's equally useful for digging a fire pit, a latrine trench when camping, or clearing snow from a path or driveway.

Keep it in the car boot over winter rather than the back of a shed — the situations it earns its keep in (stuck wheels, snow-blocked drives) tend to happen away from home.

Features to look for

Solid steel blade

Carbon or stainless steel holds an edge and copes with stony or frozen ground far better than thin pressed metal, which can bend or crack under real load.

A locking folding mechanism

A shovel that locks solidly into its extended position won't collapse mid-dig. Check reviews mention a firm lock, not just a friction hinge.

A carry pouch

A basic nylon pouch keeps the folded shovel from scratching other kit and makes it easy to strap to a pack or stow tidily in a boot.

Common mistakes

Buying it and never testing the lock

Cheap folding shovels can have a weak or gritty hinge. Open, lock and apply real pressure once at home so you know it holds before you rely on it in a ditch.

Leaving it loose in the boot

An unsecured shovel becomes a hazard in a crash and rattles constantly. Strap it down or keep it in its pouch in a fixed spot.
