Tourniquet

Emergency device for stopping life-threatening limb bleeding. Can save a life in minutes when correctly applied.

Why It Matters

Severe bleeding from a limb injury can kill in minutes. A commercial tourniquet, properly applied, stops blood loss and buys time until professional help arrives. Once considered military-only, tourniquets are now recommended for civilian first aid kits by most emergency services.

Features to Look For

Windlass mechanism
CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) style with a twist rod is proven and effective.
One-hand application
You may need to apply it to your own limb. Practise one-handed.

Common Mistakes

Applying too loosely
A loose tourniquet increases bleeding by blocking veins but not arteries.
Buying cheap imitations
Only use certified tourniquets (CAT, SOFTT-W). Cheap copies fail under pressure.
