Older iodine and plain chlorine tablets also exist, but chlorine dioxide is generally the better modern choice because it copes with Cryptosporidium and leaves less taste. Whichever you use, resist the temptation to shortcut the wait time; the chemistry needs those minutes to work. As with every method here, tablets do not remove chemical contamination, and they treat only the water you have already collected, not the source itself.
Pump and Squeeze Filters

They also depend on batteries and a working bulb, both of which can fail in cold, wet conditions far from a shop. Carry a chemical or boiling backup and never rely on a UV pen as your only method.
The Honest Limits of Field Treatment
No field method removes chemical or industrial contamination. If water may be tainted by fuel, pesticides, slurry, mine drainage or anything with a chemical smell or sheen, do not drink it; treating it will not make it safe, and there is no reliable way to fix chemically polluted water in the field. This is why source selection is your first and most important line of defence. When you are in any doubt about a biological threat, combine methods: filter first, then boil or add chemical treatment. No single method guarantees safety, and honest preparation means accepting that.
