Headlamp vs Torch: Which Should Be in Your Kit?

When the lights go out, how you hold your light changes what you can do. A headlamp straps to your forehead and frees both hands; a handheld torch throws a stronger, further beam you aim by hand.

Neither is simply 'better' — they suit different jobs. The trick is knowing which one earns its place where.

When to choose Headlamp

Choose a headlamp for anything where you need your hands: dressing a wound, fixing a fuse box, cooking on a stove, or keeping a child calm in the dark. The beam follows your eyes automatically, which is why it's the survivalist's default light.

When to choose Torch

Choose a handheld torch when you need reach and punch — scanning a garden, signalling for help, or lighting a path far ahead. A good torch throws a brighter, tighter beam than most headlamps and is quicker to point precisely.

Our verdict

If you buy one, make it a headlamp — hands-free wins for the majority of emergency tasks. But the two complement each other beautifully: a headlamp for close work and a torch for distance. Keep a headlamp per person and a stronger torch by the door, and you're covered for both.
