Best Fire Blankets for the Home

Best Fire Blankets for the Home

A fire blanket is the one bit of kitchen fire safety that almost anyone can use without training. Most home fires start on the hob, and a blanket lets you smother a pan fire or wrap around someone whose clothing has caught — quietly, without the mess or the recoil of an extinguisher. It is cheap, needs no maintenance, and belongs on the wall within reach of the cooker rather than in a cupboard behind you. Winter is when it earns its place: more cooking, more portable heaters, and more chip-pan and oil moments.

There is not much to get wrong, so the picks split by how you'll mount and use it. For most kitchens a Kitemarked (BS EN 1869) 1m x 1m blanket in a quick-pull soft pouch is all you need, and we've led with the Firechief. If it might sit in a garage, caravan or workshop where the fabric could get knocked about, a hard-case version protects the blanket and stays obvious in a hurry. We've also included two value bundles that pair a blanket with a small extinguisher, which is a sensible way to cover a first home, a rented flat or a second property in one buy. Every pick here is a real, in-stock product from the catalogue.

Features to look for

BS EN 1869 / Kitemark certified

This is the recognised UK/European fire blanket standard. A certified blanket has been independently tested to actually extinguish a fire, unlike uncertified imports.

Quick-release pull tabs

Tabs that let you pull the blanket out and unfold it in one motion matter in a real fire — fumbling with a case costs seconds you don't have.

A wall-mountable case

A rigid or soft case designed for wall mounting keeps the blanket visible and instantly accessible, rather than buried in a cupboard.

Common mistakes

Storing it out of reach

A fire blanket in a cupboard under the stairs is no use for a kitchen fire. Mount it near the cooking area so it can be grabbed in seconds.

Using it more than once

A fire blanket that's smothered a fire is damaged and should be replaced, not folded back into its case for next time.
